The world's second-ranked tennis player failed a doping test.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, ranked second in the world, has received a one-month suspension after her sample, collected outside the competitive period in August 2024, tested positive for the prohibited substance trimetazidine (TMZ), as reported by Vesti.kz.

ITIA acknowledged that the positive test was due to contamination from a regulated over-the-counter medication (melatonin), manufactured and sold in Poland, which Swiatek had taken to address jet lag and sleep issues. It is noted that the violation was therefore unintentional.

Consequently, ITIA proposed a one-month suspension for Swiatek, who acknowledged the anti-doping rule violation and accepted the penalty. She was provisionally suspended from September 22 to October 4, missing three tournaments, which counts towards the sanction. Considering the time served, the period of suspension for the Polish tennis player will end on December 4, 2024. Additionally, she will forfeit prize money from the Cincinnati Open tournament.
